UFC 99 would see the return of Mirko Cro Cop Flipovic. He was scheduled to fight against Mostapha Al-Turk in a heavyweight bout. Flipovic had been away from the league and fighting in Japan since his loss in UFC 75 against Cheick Kongo. Flipovic won the bout by technical knockout (TKO) in the first round. Al-Turk seemed to have difficulty making his moves so that they would come as a surprise to Flipovic. In other words, Flipovic saw what was coming from his opponent and was able to defend against it. Some controversy came out of this match because analysis of the replays indicated that Flipovic had made an eye poke on Al-Turk; however, in the end, it was obvious that Flipovic was a fighter with much greater skills and overwhelming force. There was a bitter score to be settled between Dan Hardy and Marcus Davis. Interviews prior to the match would record Davis as saying he had hatred for Dan Hardy. The two were scheduled for a welterweight bout and Hardy ended up defeating Davis by a split decision. Overall, it was a very close match but Hardy’s elbows were too much for Davis. The main event was between Rich Franklin and Wanderlei Silva. This was a catchweight bout and Franklin won in the third round by unanimous decision but the fight was intense all the way. What was interesting about this fight was how it ended. Franklin had taken Silva down however Silva returned to his feet and the two engaged in an intense series of blows. The fight ended with Silva waving his hands in the air and attacking Franklin with everything he had. Franklin was able to get control by taking the back of Silva but Silva still did not quit–throwing elbows in reverse. This level of intensity was seen not only at the end but throughout the fight giving the fans a truly exciting experience.
